My Crown making task Review

To start my crown, I firstly measured the wire to fit my head size and shape. I struggled to know where to start with the template, so I googled some simple crown designs and I came up with an idea of bending curves into the wire. This worked really effectively. Using the materials I was given from college, I then weaved a woven/straw material around my crown to give a wooden/ nature effect.
Once I had the template of my crown I was really pleased with how it was coming along. Using paint from home, I painted the crown different shades of brown for a wooden effect, this turned out really well. I then started to place the fake leaves where I thought they would look good. I struggled with thinking of a way to attach the leaves as I didn’t have access to a hot glue gun or any other strong glue, so I tied the leaves with the straw making sure they were secure. I also had a last minute idea to add a swirl made from wire and tied it on in the centre of the crown, I really liked how this looked.

Overall, I was impressed with the outcome as it was my first time making a crown. I think it would have been easier to make this in college as I would have had access to a hot glue gun to speed things up. To improve I would like to experiment and try out different style templates  and play with different materials.

My edited sound effects using Audacity

Footsteps (before)
Footseps (after)

I edited these sound effects using audacity, which I was shown the basics of the app and where the effects tools were. I then uploaded the sound effects onto audacity and started to edit them. I chose 'Heartbeat' and 'Footsteps'. I surprisingly got the hang of it really fast and I knew where to find the basic tools. For each effect, I played around with the pitch, pace, echo, fades etc. I'm happy with the outcome as they sound different from the original sound effect.

2 week Lockdown blog

Wednesday 11th November

Today was our first full college day online lesson as my class and I have to self isolate for 2 weeks. At the beginning of the session we were all told how the online session would work and given a timetable for the day, which was a pretty straight forward system of completing tasks and submitting them to our folders. The first task on the timetable was to design a snowman for a show, which I really enjoyed doing because I had a really good idea and I enjoyed planning it.

The next task was to watch everybody talking about Jamie and write a 500 word review on it. I was confused with this task and wrote on the wrong sheet but I noted the key notes down for my review in which I later wrote up onto word. Our class also had online group meetings to discuss what we each were going to do for next Wednesdays practical session. I was in group 1 and I already had an idea of what I wanted to do, which was to make a flower crown out of the resources I had taken last week from college.

Thursday 12th November

In todays online session we had to complete any Alice work that needed to be done. I had two reviews to complete which I did successfully. After I completed these, I was set another task which was 'how does critical reviews influence the way we stage/ plan production?' This task took some thinking and I had trouble with wording some parts of it. However I managed to complete it in time before the end of the session and I was pleased with it.

Tuesday 17th November

Today as usual, I carried on editing my website. In the second part of the session I was put into a group to finalise an idea for the snowman design for the dance show coming up. Me and 4 other classmates joined a call and discussed what idea would work best and the pros and cons to each idea. We finally agreed on an idea which was to create the snowman the cheapest and easiest way. I noted down the materials we needed and how we will carry this out when we are back at college. I am looking forward to making this with my classmates because I think our idea will work nicely.

Wednesday 18th November

In todays session I completed the practical task I had planned in last weeks session. I organised a working space which was roomy and I gathered all the materials I needed. I was really happy with the outcome of this as id never had a go at making a crown before. This session was also handy because I got to experiment with new materials.

As I had finished my task I then completed some more work on my website to make sure it was up to date. This session ran smoothly just as the week before.

Thursday 19th November

Today was another online theory session. I had completed all of my Alice work however the only thing missing from my unit 1 work is to add images of my set design. I will do this when I'm back at college. In todays session we were shown a demonstration with how to use audacity and I learnt the basics of the app. I took the unedited sound effects and had a play with the editing tools, I didn't know what most of the tools meant but I it was beneficial to try out different ones. I was really happy with the outcome. In this session i also made Christmas posters for the Hospital, these need to be laminated when I am back at college.

For this practical session I experimented with my make up kit at home. To start with I hcame up with the idea to create a joker like side smile. I only used a grease paint pallet and fake blood so if I did this again, I'd use latex and tissue to create more of a texture.

I also wanted to refresh my knowledge of bruising and scars, as I had only done this on my hand at college I wanted to try it out on my face. I went for a bruised eye which I thought turned out pretty realistic and effective.

To create the burn along the side of my face, I layered on a base colour of a pinky grease paint and then topped it with collodion for a scar texture.

For this at home practical session I made a small scale sized arm chair as to how It would look in my Alice set design. I used the scale 1:8 so my mini armchair would be about 4"x4.5". I used mod roc which I took home from college to create a sturdy

and effective looking model. I painted over this using paint from home.

Cracked face makeup look task:

For this task I was assigned to recreate a cracked face make up look, I took inspiration from the internet and began starting the look.

I began to draw thick black lines around the outer parts of my face then coloured them in to give the illusion that parts of my face were missing. I then Drew smaller lines to create more of a cracked look. I tried to create an illusion with the lips however for some reason, the lip colour on my skin didn't match the colour on y lips, this may have been because of the pink undertone of my lips.

This was my finished look, for my first attempt I didn't think it was too bad however it did need improving:

From my feedback, I want to recreate this look with all the tips I now know. I will highlight both sides of the black lines so they stand out more in any angle the light is hitting them. I will also make the black lines thinner around the edged and adding small fine black lines coming off of them. Next time I complete this look, I would also like to take my time with it as I feel like I rushed a bit and didn't plan it too well.

This time, for my second attempt i took all the feedback tips into consideration and planned my look. I decided to draw much thinner lines and highlight them with white paint each side. I also took my time and tried not to rush as i had no time limit this time. I drew the lines very carefully with a thinner brush.

I think I have improved from my first attempt and I am happy with the second outcome. I also think it is better to make many attempts so I can learn from where I went wrong and what to do to improve.

Aged Make Up Task:

For this online make up task, I was shown a demonstration of how to transform a younger face to look old which I had a list of tips to help me. For my first attempt I followed the main steps and applied the brown lines where they were needed. I then used a light concealer to highlight either side of the line. I also made my eyes darker and I applied white paint to my hair and eyebrows to make my hair look grey.

For my feedback, I was given advice to make

the lines darker and harsher. This is because

the make up needs to be seen from stage. I

also needed to make the highlight harsher to

bring out the dark lines.

For my second attempt, I recreated the look on my mum, this time I took the feedback into consideration and made the lines darker  and thicker. The second attempt looked much more effective because I was able to see the look from far away. I think my second attempt would of looked better on stage.

Audacity sound workshop:

During this session I chose a track and edited it. In the original track, I didn't like the voice, however I really liked the beat, so I had a go at playing around with it. My edited track definitely needs improving, I will improve this by fading the track out, and tidying up any parts that I think sound slightly off.

Original track:                                                                                        My edited track:

Vincent_Augustus_-_woah.mp3 2Artist Name
00:00 / 00:35
second attemptArtist Name
00:00 / 00:17

My second attempt:

For my second attempt, I decided to keep the track simple and not over complicate it as I did with my first attempt. This time, I cut out the beginning and singing parts and I slowed down the beat. I really prefer how my second attempt sounds as I think my first attempt sounded a bit off. I would like to carry on playing around with the effects on Audacity as it is still very new to me. I really enjoy editing tracks I just wish I had better understanding of how to use each tool correctly.

Recycled prop making task:

From the selection of tasks given, I decided to choose to make a prop mug from the materials I could find at home. I had an option of making a skull or a mug, I chose the mug because I already had an idea in mind. From old cardboard, I used a real mug to make measurements for the bottom,  and handle. I also got a plastic cup and cut the cardboard into a strip and taped it in a cylinder shape. This part was straight forward. I then taped on the bottom and handle which I moulded from tin foil.

Once I had my cup base, I had some mod roc left over from a previous task. The mod roc was good  to use because it made the mug solid and I could paint over it if I needed to.

1940s Make up Look Task:

For this task I had to recreate a typical look from either the 1920s, 1940s or 1980s. I chose 1940s because I really liked the style of it. I researched and took inspiration from some looks on the internet, I noticed that in the 40s, women typically wore red lipstick, naturally arched eyebrows, a hint of darker eyeshadow, and blush. I also tried to recreate a typical 40s hairstyle, including big bouncy curls and pin curls on the side.

To improve, I would make

the contour lines and

highlight harsher. As this

look is for theatre so the

makeup needs to be seen

from a far. I would also

like to

Costume design task- Recycled clothing
image11.jpeg
image9.jpeg

For this task, I was assigned to find an old item of clothing and transform it into something better. I had two old vest tops, which were the same however one was white and one was black. I liked the two tops separately but I thought they would look better as one.

I got inspiration from online, I had seen contrasting tops are very in fashion at the moment so I wanted to create my own using my old tops.

To start, I measured to the middle of the vests and cut down the middle of each. I then simply lined them up and pinned them together.

As I don't have a sewing machine I had to hand sew the the two tops together. It was really straight forward to do but it took longer than a sewing machine would.

This was my final outcome of my top I am really pleased with it. I really like contrasting tops and I wear black and white a lot so I will definitely be wearing this in the future. It was very simple to do and I really enjoyed making it. I would like to have another go at this and experiment with for colours, patterns and textures. I would also like to use a sewing machine so the clothing can be held together well. My top can be worn however I would like to go over the stitching using a sewing machine so it is held together better.

Makeup Task: Burn

IMG_7838_edited.jpg
IMG_7840.jpg

To create this burn on my hand, i firstly applied an uneven layer of liquid latex to my psalm and wrist, i needed the latex to be uneven to create more of a realistic texture. Once the latex had dried i used a pair of sharp tweezers to pick holes in the latex to make the skin look like it had split open and melted. I layered a light pink grease paint over the top with some areas more coloured than others. This made the burn like raw and very sore. I then got a small brush and coloured the burn more in depth in the areas of the latex/ burnt skin.

I didn’t have any fake puss so i  used a mixture of hair gel and a yellow/white eyeshadow. When i applied this to the burn i think it looked really effective and completed the look. For my first attempt i am pretty pleased with how it came out, However next time i would like to experiment with collodion as it’s effective for creating fake burns.
